How to measure the internal resistance of a LiPo battery?

Measuring the internal resistance of a LiPo battery is important to ensure its performance and health. Lower internal resistance indicates a healthier LiPo battery, while higher resistance may indicate aging or damage. You can measure the internal resistance of a LiPo battery using the following methods:

  1. Multimeter method (not recommended): Using a standard multimeter to measure the internal resistance of a LiPo battery is not recommended because the resistance values are typically very low (in the milliohm range) and most multimeters do not provide accurate readings at such low resistance levels.
  2. High-quality RC battery charger: Some advanced RC battery chargers and dischargers feature built-in functions to measure the internal resistance of LiPo batteries. These chargers typically use a four-wire Kelvin sensing method to provide more accurate measurements. To measure the internal resistance, connect the LiPo battery to the charger and follow the charger’s instructions. The charger will display the internal resistance of each cell, and sometimes also provide an overall internal resistance value.
  3. ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) meter: ESR meters are specifically designed to measure low resistance values, making them suitable for LiPo battery internal resistance measurement. Connect the ESR meter to the LiPo battery terminals and follow the meter’s instructions to obtain the internal resistance value. It’s important to note that not all ESR meters are designed for LiPo batteries, so choose one that is compatible with LiPo battery measurement.
  4. Battery analyzer: Some professional-grade LiPo battery analyzers can measure the internal resistance of LiPo batteries. These devices are typically more expensive and used in research or commercial settings, but they provide highly accurate results. Connect the LiPo battery to the analyzer and follow the device’s instructions to obtain the internal resistance value.
